Aw no thank YOU for this sweet message! :)
Wow… so I checked it out. This is the video in question. There are a number of obvious things I have issues with:
- To begin with the initial hit was terrible, he didn’t even have the puck… it looked like Peltonen was blindsided and caught completely off guard.
- How Ben-Amor jumped the guy without even giving him a chance to look up, yet alone NOD or give a YEAH LET’S GO or any sort of body language that agreed to the fight.
- The continuous punches to the head even after he was knocked out after the first one… uh.
I also was kind of grossed out by the reaction of the crowd during the fight, but I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt that they probably did not know the extent to which Peltonen was injured (being unconscious)… and it all happened pretty quick, let’s face it you’d be excited if a brawl like that broke out too. I don’t follow the Finnish league but I’m sure they don’t see attacks like that often so I’m not surprised that police got involved… it looked more like an assault than a hockey fight to me. Anyways I’m sure you don’t even have to be a hockey fan to know that was completely cowardly, gutless, etc. Comparable to Moore/Bertuzzi maybe? In a sense that the situation is one where a player is not only caught off guard but is hopeless to defend himself. Absolutely no need for cheap shots and “fights” like that in hockey under any circumstances. If that happened in the NHL just imagine the punishment Ben-Amor would’ve received… especially if he was a repeat offender. Not pretty. Hope Peltonen recovers well.
